One of the first things you should do with our new AWS account is to set up a billing alarm that will throw a notification your way if your spending exceeds a predefined amount. This is important in case you make a mistake or deploy something and forget to destroy it. It happens and the result is always unexpected cost. You need to guard yourself from this as much as possible.
After logging in as root, on the right side of the console you should see this …
You can get to the alerts by going to the top bar and, on your meny, you can choose MyBilling Dashboard. At the bottom of that page there is a link for you to setup alerts
NOTE: Once billing alerts are enabled they cannot be disabled.
Once you press Save preferences you can then click on Manage Billing Alerts and you will be taken over to cloud watch because this is where you do all your monitoring.
Clicking Create Alarm …. make the limit $10 and add an email address …..
You will get an email with a link to confirm that you are willing to accept alerts to that email address. Click the link and and you are good to go.
